Nomvelo Makhanya

Nommvelo Makhanya is a young actress that plays the role of Lindiwe Ngema on the hit tv show Scandal! Lindiwe is the daughter of Mlungisi and Zinzile Ngema, and Scelo’s little sister. The Ngemas are a very traditional Zulu family that is sceptical about contemporary urban culture.

Mvelo, as her friends call her, has appeared on many productions that have given her the opportunity to work with other amazing actors and directors. “Playing any role is exciting and challenging. Lindiwe is a character I really enjoy playing because I get to grow with her and fortunately I have awesome people around me who I love working with,” she said.

How did you get to art school?

My mom brought it to my attention, in all honesty arts school wasn’t my plan. I pursued it to prove a point to the many that didn’t believe I could make it into the school, but yeah my mother was the plug.

Outside of acting, what else would you like to do?

Outside of acting.... I have been really trying to get my steps in place you know? Perfecting my craft in acting and singing so I really haven’t gotten as far as planning formally. However I’m always open to giving back and I do so whenever the chance provides itself.

Makhanya, who hails from Nkandla in KwaZulu-Natal says her most memorable moment performing on stage was, “seeing the audience happy during my performance and realizing that this (acting) is what I wanted to do for the rest of my life!”

At only 20 years old she has found her footing in what promises to be a wonderful and lengthy professional acting career.
