DO NOT COMPROMISE FOR THE WRONG PEOPLE.

I’m scrolling through my phone in hopes that I will find something to motivate me to start writing something, anything, but there is nothing. Then I start wondering if maybe I have lost true essence of who I am. I mean, writing came naturally to me; didn’t ever take me more than a few minutes to get something on paper. As I think about all this I start thinking about what could have led me to start losing myself. I guess as human beings we get caught up in the life we find ourselves living, not the life that we know as individuals – not the lives we want to live but the lives that are handed to us through our social circles.

I then went on to think about what are the most influential social circles that could lead one to losing themselves… intimate relationships and friendships. For instance, when one is in an intimate relationship they spend so much energy and time on this person that everything they do ends up revolving around their lover. One compromises so much that they end up compromising the right aspects of who they are for the wrong reasons. I’m about to take it up a notch, let’s say a girl promises herself to never have sex before marriage because that’s how she has been brought up by her family and that is the life she is choosing to live. She then meets a guy, falls in love, and finds herself caught up between staying true to herself or compromising her beliefs and values. In the real world, she could have the choice of leaving her lover and staying true to herself but due to this stigma found in relationships she would most likely have sex with her lover. That’s just one way of how one could slowly lose themselves.

Friendships also play their role in the way people end up losing themselves. Friendships come with pressure, pressure to fit in, pressure to do what your friends are doing or else one will find themselves feeling left out. One finds themselves doing things that they would not do and find that okay with them. One finds themselves supporting the idea that being a person that sleeps around and forces themselves to not catch emotions. When has sexually giving yourself over to numerous people been a normal and good thing to do? When has that been better than finding one person and sticking to them? But one finds themselves rooting for these sickening ideologies because it’s the ‘cool’ thing these days. We do all this blind to the fact that we are slowly burning down real walls and building up fake ones that tarnish one’s soul.

So, young man and girl reading this, do not lose yourself just to fit in. Do not do things that go against your values and beliefs just because you feel you need to compromise for people that will end up treating you as if you are worthless or friends that will end up making you feel you aren’t cool enough for them after all the habits you let go of for them. Find self-discipline and solace. At the end of it all it will only matter whether you stayed true to yourself or not. Think twice or even three times before doing something before you find yourself not being able to do things that came naturally to you, like how I could not write this article for days because I had no idea how to [let us all laugh together].
